SoftSwim F.A.Q.
How is Softswim different from chlorine?
SoftSwim kills bacteria differently. Imagine "B" as microscopic fly-paper. The bacteria (and algae) attracted and suck to the "B," where they die. Millions of other microscopic particles also accumulate on the "B," and the "B" is ultimately trapped in the filter. These "sticky" particles accumulating in the filter make chemical cleaning of the filter so essential.
What is the ideal pool for Softswim?
We have found that a vinyl liner pool with less than 25,000 gallons of water, a sand filter, and a bottom drain is the ideal pool for SoftSwim. Aboveground pools are typically good candidates.
Can I use Softswim if my pool is not ideal?
Absolutely! But you do need to be aware of the differences. For instance, a plaster finish pool is generally more likely to contain metals that could cause the "B" & "C" to be consumed faster. (In this case maintenance applications of SoftSwim Stain Control would be essential.) Cartridge and DE filters MUST be chemically cleaned more frequently than sand filters. Failure to keep the filter chemically cleaned will result in cloudy water.
A pool without a bottom drain does not circulate as well as a pool with a bottom drain.
How does SoftSwim compare to chlorine in cost of operation?
Generally speaking, SoftSwim will cost more. Typically as little as 50 cents a day more, depending on the size and type of the pool. A pool with less than 25,000 gallons is a better candidate for SoftSwim based on cost of operation.
Can I use Softswim if my pool has an attached spa?
Yes, however the aeration in the spa will cause the water to be foamy while the spa is in use.
Does rain affect SoftSwim?
Rain affects all pools. Heavy rainfall, increased bather loads, fertilizers, pets... in short, most anything that gets into the water begins to increase the demand on chemicals. SoftSwim "C" is consumed more rapidly when rain, bathers, etc. increase during the hot days of summer. Should the B or C level fall below their ideal range, the result could be hazy; cloudy water. Make sure you have the water regularly tested, especially during the heat of summer (June through August). Maintain a pH between 7.47.8, 30-50 ppm of "B" and 20-60 ppm of "C" Should the water begin to cloud, SoftSwim Filter Aid and Flocculant may be recommended by your dealer in addition to the "B" and "C" applications, to quickly resolve the problem.
